The Audi R8 Green Hell: Coming Soon to a Auto Repair Shop?

Posted 8/10/20

We were talking about to renaming our auto repair shop in Cincinnati the Green Hell, because we’ll work like the devil to keep your European car running like a champ, but alas, Audi beat our technicians to the punch.

Audi has trademarked the phrase “R8 Green Hell” in Europe, and speculation suggests that this could possibly for an upcoming variant of its Audi R8 mid-engined sports car that honors the Nürburgring, as first reported MotorTrend.

If you aren’t familiar with the nickname, the famous German Nürburgring track earned the moniker “Green Hell” from the great British Formula One driver Jackie Stewart. Audi is definitely familiar with the track, developing the R8 there as well a using it to run laps with its R8 E-Tron prototype.

Every Audi Fan Likes to Speculate What’s Under the Hood

What might lurk under the hood of an Audi called the R8 Green Hell? MotorTrend has a few ideas: “Probably less weight and more power from the model’s already mighty 5.2-liter V-10 engine, which pumps out 602 horsepower in the high-end Performance model.”

Motor Authority put it this way:

“If Audi really does intend to build an R8 Green Hell, there’s no mincing words on what it would be. It would be a hardcore version of the R8 with some connection to the Nürburgring, be it a track-focused special edition or a version of the R8 intended to set a lap record.”

“For reference, the current Nürburgring lap record for production cars is 6:44.97, set by the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ in 2018.”

Maybe a Head Gasket of a Pipe Dream To See A Green Hell

MotorTrend was also quick to point out the potential of an upcoming Green Hell model was purely conjecture:“ it’s entirely possible that Audi simply registered to trademark “R8 Green Hell” for no reason related to a production vehicle. After all, it’s not uncommon for brands to apply for trademarks in order to claim a name before another brand is able to do so.”

And the news gets worse for the Audi mechanics and fans working at our Cincinnati auto repair shop. Apparently no one at the Audi USA office knows anything about the that name being trademarked in the US. It hasn’t been patented here, which means that if they ever do make an R8 Green Hell, its unlikely to have distribution on this side of the Atlantic.

So, even if the Green Hell dream does become a reality, chances of us actually repairing one in the US at our auto repair shop in Cincinnati are pretty slim.
