Car Troubleshooting: When Your Engine Doesn’t Start

Troubleshooting a car repair? It can be a frustrating experience, even for mechanics! But even if you can’t actually fix the problem yourself, you can often get a pretty good idea what’s wrong with it — or at least have an educated guess. If the starter doesn’t crank, for example — you turn the key to the start position but the engine doesn’t turn over — most likely you have a dead battery. Most mechanics would be happy to test your battery for you. If you go to start the car but the engine doesn’t crank and all you hear is a single click, you again have a dead battery or a weak connection at your battery terminals. To fix either of these problems in the interim, you could try jumping your car. It’s a good idea to keep a pair of jumper cables in your trunk just for this purpose.
