BMW is set to open a $1 billion plant in Mexico — the country’s first — despite the threat of potential tarifs from Trump.
The new facility will be located in the central Mexican city of San Luis Potosi. The launch will employ 2,500 workers. The plant is expected to produce 175,000 mid-sized sedans annually that will then be exported to some 40 countries around the world.
“From here, we will deliver BMW 3 Series cars to the world,” said Oliver Zipse, a board member in charge of production. “Mexico has a key geographical position, situated between North and South America, the Atlantic and the Pacific.”
Tariff Threat
The company is taking a gamble, however, on the risk of threatened tariffs on Mexican imported goods from the Trump administration. But it’s also increasing its presence in the US with a $600 million investment in its existing US plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
“We are a big investor in the US,” Zipse said.
