Sure, the 2020 Mercedes-AMG CLA45 packs more power than last year’s model, but that’s just the beginning.
The new model’s boasts an impressive 382 HP, not that last year’s 375 was all that bad. And it’s got plenty of speed (if 0 to 60 mph in less than 4 seconds fast enough for you).
But what the new model has truly going for it is an impressively awesome design.
“Although the platform that it rides on is biased toward the front wheels, the CLA45 can send its torque toward the rear thanks to a complicated driveline that can also split torque between the rear wheels via separate clutches. That’s more important than spec hunting. Even more than that? There’s a drift mode, too.
“That 2.0-liter turbo-4 isn’t just an evolution of the last-generation CLA45’s engine; it’s fairly different this time around. The M139 engine from Affalterbach has been massaged by AMG professionals and is one of the most power-dense power plants on the planet. Slicker cylinder walls, roller bearings in the turbocharger, and a new electronically controlled wastegate keep the busy engine spinning furiously up to 7,200 rpm. Mercedes says it’s tuned the responsiveness from the turbos to mimic a naturally aspirated engine — the power builds progressively instead of peaking early and plateauing to a redline.”
A Tradition of Excellence
So yeah, sign us up. As Mercedes mechanics, we’re always thrilled to see the latest Mercedes has to offer. Mercedes is an incredible car. That’s why we love to repair them, drive them, own them.
Buyers in the US and Cincinnati will have to be contented with the CLA45 — a 3/5ths-size replica of the AMG GT 4-Door, complete with AMG grille, hood and signature paint and interior color schemes.
“The CLA45 will be a taste of the M139 engine in the States—at least initially. The A45’s future is shaky in the U.S., and we’ll have to wait for the GLA,” Aaron Cole writes in his review for Motor Authority. “For now, the 2020 CLA45 is as good as it’s going to get—and it’s going to get powerful.”
Though the price tag hasn’t been revealed yet officially, expect it to be at least $54,000 to start with.
Which means our Mercedes mechanics will have to start saving up their Swear Jars. That’s a chunk of change, but well worth it for a quality Mercedes.
