When its time for Land Rover repair for owners of older Land Rovers, it’s always a question of whether you should rebuild or replace your Land Rover V8 engine. The aluminum V8 engines typically require a great deal of auto repair. In fact, engines in the last P38 Range Rover and Discovery II models have a reputation of needing expensive car repair throughout their lifetimes. It is really worth repairing something that is so prone to mechanical problems?
Land Rover Repair: Two Common Engine Failures
There are generally two common engine fails that will leave your engine stranded at the repair shop. Overheating failure is the most common. The engine consumes coolant for a while, which can lead to depletion of the coolant in the engine. If the low coolant state is not spotted and given a radiator flush or at least a top off, this can lead to some pretty catastrophic engine failure.
Coolant is called coolant for a reason. It keeps the engine—which we remind you is constantly filled with tiny explosions while it is running—cool enough that the engine block is not warped or cracked from the heat. And though aluminum is lighter and better at staying cool than a heavier iron engine, aluminum warps at much lower temperatures than the cast iron. So if your Land Rover is driven for too long with too little coolant, you are probably going to need to replace that engine because it will break down, warp, or sieze.
Land Rover’s Common Engine Number Two: Oil Pressure Loss
Another common engine failure with the Land Rover’s V8 is oil pressure loss. The oil pump is prone to wear out every 100,000 miles, which leads to low oil pressure. And like not having enough coolant, not having enough oil circulating in the engine can lead to some very expensive engine repairs. Depending on what year it is, you can fix this with a new front cover, assuming your main and rod bearings are not worn out.
If the pump completely fails, you lose pressure altogether. If you ignore the oil pressure warning light that comes on when that pressure drops, your Land Rover’s engine can completely fail. Once again, an overheated aluminum engine is often a warped aluminum engine. If the engine in your Land Rover has completely failed, it is likely that it’s best to completely replace the engine.
