Now that Saabs are no longer being made, Saab fans had all but lost hope of ever seeing an electric Saab on the market.
Maybe so, but thanks to the revival efforts of NEVS (National Electric Vehicle Sweden), which bought Saab, a production electric cars are planned based on classic Saab designs.
The company’s electric 9-3 series, including a four-door sedan and a 9-3X wagon, is based on long-gone Saab 9-3 and 9-3X models that date back to a January 2002 debut. The new series debuted earlier in June at the 2017 CES Asia trade show.
Old Design, New Electricity
Yes, it’s based on the long-gone Saab 9-3 and 9-3X models that date back to a January 2002 debut, but they are powered exclusively by electric motors.
“They include a Wi-Fi hotspot, over-the-air update capability, smartphone control, fleet management tracking and recording software, and a cabin air filter that is said to eliminate 99 percent of ‘hazardous particles,’” states Green Car Reports. “NEVS also says the vehicles will exhibit Saab traits—without actually mentioning the word Saab in its press release—of safety, quality, handling, and comfort.”
About 150,000 models of the NEVS 9-3 series vehicle have already been ordered. There are also plans to release a 9-3X wagon model.
