Jaguar Repair: Changing Pulleys on Your Jaguar XKR Supercharger

Posted 8/17/14

Looking to do a pulley upgrade on a Jaguar 2001 XKR supercharger? Updating these pulleys is a relatively simple way to give your Jag more horsepower and more performance. Changing the pulley size can up the amount of air pressure your supercharger forces into your engine. The 4.0 and 4.2 L super charged XKRs use a Jaguar specific Eaton M112 supercharger. There are three pulley changes a Jaguar mechanic can use in order to get the supercharger to spin faster. These include a 1.5 PSI supercharger pulley upgrade, a 3 PSI supercharger pulley upgrade, or a 4.5 PSI Crankshaft pulley upgrade. If you know what you’re doing, you can pull this job off in your own garage. If not, one of the Jaguar technicians at European Auto Specialists can help, thanks to over 60 years of combined experience specializing in Jaguar repair.

Some Jaguar XKR Pulley Upgrade Options

Upgrading to a 1.5 PSI supercharger pulley is certainly the easiest of these options, when it comes to parts and labor. You pretty much just cut the old pulley off and press on a new one. You’ll need to either rent or purchase a special tool (legitimately called a pulley puller) to get the old one off, because an ordinary 3 jaw puller might not work or even damage the supercharger.

A +3 PSI supercharger pulley upgrade takes about the same number of parts, but there’s more labor required. Most likely, you’ll want to leave this kind of Jaguar repair upgrade to a trusted Cincinnati Jaguar mechanic like European Auto Specialists. The +3 PSI pulley is 2.6 inches in diameter, which is far too small to fit over the supercharger snout. The snout will need to be ground down once you’ve removed the old pulley.

Though you don’t have to actually modify the supercharger itself, a 4.5 PSI Crankshaft pulley upgrade is by far the most expensive option. You remove the crank pulley and damper assembly with a puller. Then you take it to a machine shop to install a larger diameter pulley. The new unit is then installed, and unlike with the first two, you’ll probably need a larger belt.

Tips for Great Car Repair, Cincinnati!

It’s a simple fact. You get out of your car what you put into it. Take care of it, and you’ll get plenty of years and mileage and fewer car maintenance bills over the long run. Make sure to get regular oil changes. Make flushing and changing your coolant a once a year habit. Don’t forget to wash your car regularly. This protects the paint job, but you also want to wash the bottom of the car to remove any wintry salt that will cause erosion. Wax your car every six months to protect the varnish. You should also keep it parked in the shade, as this will protect the interior from sun damage. Use a UV protectant to further protect the vinyl and plastic from cracking in the heat. And be sure to have your vehicle regularly tuned up by the folks at European Auto Specialists in Cincinnati, your local experts in European cars.
