Earlier this year, Jaguar made the bold decision to only create cars that run on a completely electric platform. Though many import and European car companies are headed in that same direction, Jaguar has decided to do something a bit unusual in the process. Even though Jag does currently have the electric I-Pace in their lineup, they have decided to axe production of it along with all of their other gas powered models. JLR—which is what the Jaguar Land Rover company is now going by these days—is starting Jaguar with a completely clean slate and a wholly new lineup of cars. Though this seems like a risky proposition, Jag wants to court the upscale luxury market. Having a car that doesn’t fit their new image just won’t work.
Time For A Teaser: Jaguar Hints At The First New Model
At this point, the plan is for Jaguar to release three new models, all of which are more focused on competing with the more luxurious players on the market, such as Bentley and Porsche. Adrian Mardell, the CEO, recently dropped hints that the first car on the lineup will be revealed at an event in the U.S. later in 2024. Though details are scant at this point, we do know that it will be 4-door grand tourer that is to retail for around $125,000—and is likely be Jag’s answer to the Porsche Taycan.
According to Motor Authority, the unnamed GT will be more powerful than any previous Jag—the current F-Type can of produce 575 hp—with a range of 430 miles according to the less stringent overseas WLTP test cycle. Though there hasn’t been EPA testing done just yet, it’s safe to say that the EPA range should be well over 300 miles.
Jaguar has also been working on their own electric platform, called (unsurprisingly) the Jaguar Electrified Platform. Part of their whole rebranding and upscaling process is working on an electric platform which is completely unique to Jag. The idea is that the exclusive platform will help enhance the new Jaguar luxury experience, and make sure that Jaguar stands apart because of it.
A Slow Rollout of The New Jaguar Lineup: Years to Wait
JLR clearly has in mind how they want to update the Jaguar legacy with cars that are more elite and luxurious than ever. Jag promises that despite the fact that production of their current models will end in June 2024 that they will still be available for well over a year after their production ends as they transition into EV production. And though the GT model is set to be available at some point in 2025, the second isn’t slated for distribution until later in 2025, and the third not until 2026. It seems like a risky proposition to stop production on everything before even being able to fully gauge the buyer’s interest in the all-new, more expensive Jaguar lineup.
Our Jaguar technicians are excited to see what JLR and Jaguar have cooking for their three big EV releases in the next few years. JLG has put $18.6 billion of investment into their new rebranding and electrification scheme, so we sure hope that it is worth the wait.
