The Purosangue: Ferrari’s First Foray Into the SUV Market

Posted 9/19/22

Every gearhead has a special place in their hearts for Ferraris. They are sleek and powerful—and as every kid who had a Testarossa poster on their bedroom wall growing up could tell you—incredibly beautiful as well. For a very long time Ferrari has held out from entering the race for best luxury SUV, with their former chairman Luca di Montezemolo often claiming that Ferrari would never make an SUV. Since he is now the former chairman, however, Ferrari has changed their tune.

A Forthcoming Ferrari Crossover SUV Requires Speculation

When the initial details about the Purosangue were released in August of 2021, there was a great deal of theorizing as to what Ferrari’s new SUV would be like. Though clearly designed to compete with other high-end SUVs—like Lamborghini’s Urus and Aston Martin’s DBX—Ferrari had to do something entirely their own. The initial reports claimed that the crossover would be built on a chassis that would accommodate AWD and a plug-in hybrid powertrain, which meant it would be available with a V8 supported by hybrid engines. There was also speculation that depending on emissions regulations there would be a V12 available similar to that found on Ferraris’ Scuderia. Perhaps there would be height adjustable suspension that would accommodate track days as well as off-roading. As far as visuals, every auto magazine took a crack at their vision of how the Purosangue would look, with the sleek aerodynamic curves one can expect from a Ferrari with variations on size and height.

Ferrari’s March 2022 Teaser: It’s Happening and Camera Shy

Though speculation still continues apace, Ferrari has let some information out of their stable, posting an atmospheric dark photograph face-to-face with the Purosangue and the headline of “It’s Happening.” The “genuine game changer” parked in the image is red, and appears to have curves, headlights, side-view mirrors and a Ferrari badge. Thats about all you can see, and all Ferrari seems to be willing to part with for the time being.

If you are feeling impatient, however, Car Magazine has some paparazzi-style photos of the Purosangue, some with the car heavily wrapped and disguised to deter the type of people that try to leak photos of pre-production cars, and one image of a sleek silver Purosangue covertly taken from the production floor. They claim that though the initial release of the Ferrari’s SUV will be a hybrid, that it will be followed by an all electric version. The V12 version is also still under consideration, with the emissions being the main concern there.

Whenever the Purosangue is finally released to the public, it will be safe to say that Ferrari’s first SUV will be both a compelling and luxurious vehicle. This SUV that Ferrari claimed they would never make will have to be something absolutely special in order for it to get it past the purists who didn’t want Ferrari to make anything other than supercars. It will definitely be worth the wait.
